Luno and VALR — South Africa’s two biggest crypto exchanges — are both warning that proposed new rules could break cross-border trade. When the on-ramps sound the alarm, South African Bitcoin users should pay close attention.
What the exchanges are saying
Both platforms have formally pushed back against the draft regulations that would require detailed declarations for every cross-border Bitcoin transfer. Their argument: the rules are vague, expensive to implement, and could push SA users to unregulated offshore platforms — exactly the opposite of what regulation is meant to achieve.
For the ordinary SA user: your on-ramp — the place you buy Bitcoin with rands — could change how it works. If compliance costs spike, expect slower withdrawals, more paperwork, or restricted features.
