The Garden Route Bitcoin Hub

The Garden Route has the densest cluster of bitcoin-accepting businesses in South
Africa.
This page is the honest map of it: what takes sats, what was checked recently,
and what to phone before you drive.

Start here: Wilderness

At the time of writing, 7 places in Wilderness are listed as taking bitcoin, and
2 of them have been confirmed in the last 90 days. The freshest listing in town is
Wildfarm Homestead — 291 Whites Road,
on-chain and Lightning, for the bed, the bar and the pizza.

What a night at the hub costs in sats

Rand rates are the truth; the sats figure moves with the price. At BTC ≈ R1,347,459:

  • Dorm bed — R320 ≈ 23,700 sats
  • Private double — R750 ≈ 55,700 sats
  • Self-catering cottage — R1,150 ≈ 85,300 sats

Lightning: wildfarm@blink.sv. On-chain at reception. Book direct and save 10% —
what the stay includes.

Planning the road trip?

The Garden Route is roughly 300 km of coast, and the bitcoin stops cluster. From Wilderness:
Sedgefield 25 km (55 listed), Knysna 45 km (24), Plettenberg Bay 100 km (89), Mossel Bay 60 km the
other way (71), George 15 km (23). If you are paying in sats, plan the overnight around the
verified places, not the biggest list — a confirmed bed beats a pin that has not been
checked since August.

The rest of the route

  • Knysna — 24 listed, but none confirmed in the last 90 days. It was 83
two months ago; listings disappear when a business closes or quietly stops accepting. Phone first.
  • Plettenberg Bay — 89 listed, the biggest cluster on the route.
  • Mossel Bay — 71. Sedgefield — 55. George — 23.
  • Pick n Pay — every store in the country takes bitcoin through the CryptoQR /
MoneyBadger app, so groceries are covered even where no independent merchant is listed.

Check before you drive

Numbers move weekly. Two independent sources, both free:

  • SatSpots — Wilderness and
Knysna: every listing carries how recently it was
confirmed, and you can confirm one yourself in a few seconds with no account.
  • BTC Map: the global map. Our own pin (OpenStreetMap node
4069834625) still shows an older verification date while an update works through — the label is
    bookkeeping, the till is live.

Is bitcoin accepted in South Africa?

Yes. Bitcoin is legal here and treated as a financial asset — the FSCA licenses crypto asset
service providers, SARS expects capital gains declared on disposal, and there is a travel rule for
transfers between providers. You do not need permission to accept bitcoin for a bed or a beer, and
you do not need a bank to hold it. That is exactly why a place like this can exist at the end of
Whites Road.

Wallets that work on the route

Blink, Phoenix and Wallet of Satoshi all do Lightning, which is what you want at a bar: instant,
sub-cent fees, no waiting for a block. Keep on-chain for larger amounts.
